Gaining access

To obtain access to the flow cytometry laboratory on the 15th floor of Guy's Tower your NHS ID card will have to be activated. In addition, you will have to be trained on the CRF alarm system.

How to obtain an activated NHS Trust ID card

For users with existing NHS ID:

Please email your request for access to the 15th floor flow lab to Susanne Heck or Jo Studham. They will contact Trust security to authorise your access.  Your card will be upgraded remotely or you can go directly to the security desk. This usually requires 24 hours.

For users with KCL ID only:

You need to fill out an application form (word) for a white ID card for non-clinical staff

The card is free of charge.  Please go to the Trust ID card shop to have your picture taken and a card is issued (usually within 24 hours).

Once you have the ID card please email Susanne Heck or Jo Studham to ask for access to the 15th floor flow lab; they will contact Trust security to authorise access. Your card can be upgraded remotely or you can go directly to the security desk. This usually requires 24 hours.

Training on the CRF alarm system

Training on the CRF alarm system is part of the mandatory basic training class.

For users requiring only access to the FlexMap3D or the Amnis ImagestreamX, you will be advised on the CRF alarm system after you have obtained card access. Please email Susanne Heck to make an appointment.

Access to the flow cytometry laboratory instrumentation

To obtain login credentials to the core instruments you will have to take part in a mandatory basic training course. Course dates and booking information is available in the flow training section.

To obtain access to the self service BD FACSAria™ II Cell Sorter you will have to be an advanced flow cytometry user. You will need prior approval of the Senior Flow Cytometry Manager and until further notice the requirement will be that you have taken part in a BD ARIA operator training course. At a later point in time the core facility will start to offer training on the sorter.

If users repeatedly fail to safely operate the sorter the Senior Flow Cytometery Manager reserves the right to review and/or revoke your access to the self service ARIA in order to maximise productivity for the user base as a whole.
