Clinical research facilities

Supporting the running of new clinical research facilities at Guy's and St Thomas' is central to the Biomedical Research Centre's strategy to support the translation of research into the clinical arena.

If you are a clinician, researcher or allied health professional carrying out studies involving patients or healthy volunteers, our clinical research facilities could provide you with the perfect setting to carry out your research.

The clinical research facilities provide a welcoming and comfortable environment, enabling more patients and volunteers to participate in clinical studies.

St Thomas'

The facility on the St Thomas' site is located on the fourth floor of North Wing.  It includes:

  • a bright and comfortable five bedded clinical ward
  • a body composition laboratory
  • a patient lounge and eating area where staff can conduct nutritional studies
  • a fully equipped kitchen 
  • a blood flow laboratory
  • an exercise laboratory
  • two dedicated cardiovascular ultrasound rooms
  • four consulting and three examination rooms
  • two sample laboratories
  • an eye examination room
  • a dexa scanning room
  • a drug preparation area
  • office accommodation for research and nursing staff
  • reception and waiting areas for patients and volunteers

Guy's

The facility on the Guy's site is located on the 15th floor of Guy's Tower.  It includes:              

  • a bright and comfortable reception and lounge for research participants 
  • four examination/consultation rooms
  • two rooms with three day case recliner chairs in each
  • three x two-bedded areas (two under negative pressure)
  • a procedure room for eg bronchoscopies and biopsies
  • a flow cytometry and immune monitoring laboratory
  • a sample handling laboratory
  • a 160m² Good Manufacturing Practice compliant facility with three independent cleanrooms 
  • office accommodation for research and nursing staff
  • a fully equipped hospital kitchen
  • a meeting room with audiovisual capability

Flow cytometry laboratory

The flow cytometry laboratory contains the latest equipment, enabling researchers to carry out immune monitoring on samples taken from healthy volunteers and patients

Good Manufacturing Cleanroom facility 

The Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) cleanroom facility will become operational during the coming year.  It will enable researchers to manufacture novel Cell and Protein therapies as Investigational Medicinal Products for Phase 1 clinical trials.

The cell therapy cleanrooms are fully equipped for closed aseptic processing from whole blood, immuno-magnetic sorting, cell culture, use of viral vectors, cryopreservation and cell storage and include three large Grade A isolators with in-built centrifuges and cold chambers.
